Anxious City Scene

Medium

Acrylic Paints

Size

__ X__ inches

Date

December 2025

This piece was to be the first of my original inquiry about how emotions can affect our outlook on life. This piece and my inquiry worked off each other to develop the inquiry of the aspects of time, specifically how it's perceived and its effects. This piece, as in the name, focuses on the anxious aspect using perspective and distortion to emphasize this. For color choice, I knew black and white was the way to go. I planned on using charcoal originally and then switched to acrylics to be able to achieve the best details and blending. The use of acrylics also benefited from being able to emphasize the time aspect with color and a glow only around the clock tower and light sources. I went for a partly realistic and partly impressionist style. My master artist which I looked at for reference was Thomas Hart Benton, I admire his use of distortion and painting style.

This study was the first one with acrylic paints and was a good practice of showing lights/darks, blending, and gradients, which showed me that it was the material I wanted to use for my selected work.
